A Day of Remembrance

Remembering the Fallen

I don’t normally write about things that aren’t related to design on Creative Beacon, but 9/11 is a day that I just can’t ignore. This morning, I read a guest post by Joe McNally on Scott Kelby’s blog about how his photography helped a firefighter involved in 9/11 to heal. I ended up reading this post from start to finish, and was blown away at how Joe formed a relationship with the Firefighter and his wife. We were viciously attacked that day, and the aftermath left a huge psychological scar on many.  9/11/01 was the single most tragic event of our generation. We all have loved ones spread all over the country, and on that day, we dropped everything we were doing to make sure that they were okay.

Remembering the Brave

We sometimes forget that there were people that were right there in the middle of this horrible event. People’s lives were changed forever. Many lives were ended way too soon. In the midst of this tragedy were people that were ordinary men and women, just like you and me, but they weren’t ordinary in character. When everyone else was running for their lives away from the danger and the sheer terror that was happening, these men and women were running right into the danger without hesitation.

There was no time to think and to worry about themselves, they put their very lives on the line to save others. They ran into burning buildings in order to save people that they didn’t even know, not knowing if they would may it out alive. Many didn’t. Fathers, brothers, sisters, mothers, aunts, uncles, friends and family members, or maybe even your next door neighbors walked into absolute danger with no regard for their own lives.

This day is a day of remembrance for many reasons. We remember fallen family members. We remember the horror of terrorism. We remember that that the world isn’t so innocent, and that we aren’t invincible. One of the most important things that we remember is that there are those who put their lives on the line, not just on that day, but every day, to ensure our safety, to rescue us from danger, and to help us when we are in need.
