Does Going Green Save Green?

As Designers, especially in print, it is out responsibility to consider our impact on the world, not only visually, but environmentally. Many times we consider green printing products and think of big budget clients, but there are many options out there that are cost effective for printing as well. There are companies out there that offer soy based inks, some that offer recycled paper products, and these companies all help us to lower our impact and lessen our carbon footprint on the world.

From what I have found, green printers are cost effective and fairly competitive, but are still more expensive than conventional printing methods. The problem with this is that many clients, and many designers want to get the lowest possible pricing, so many times this option is overlooked. I saw quotes for 1000 business cards from various green printers starting at $60.00, but with conventional printers, you can get 2000 cards for the same price, and that is 4 colors on both sides. Personally, I do not do as many print projects as I do web design projects, and when I do, there are no local green printers. there are online places to go, but I personally am not willing to sacrifice my client’s happiness to try out a green printer that may offer poor quality.

Has anyone else had experience with green printing? Have you found cost effective, competitive green printers? Did your projects turn out as well as you expected? Did they look as good as printing with a conventional printer? Are the colors as vivid as conventional inks? I have seen some great results in magazines and online, but not every company is the same. I would love to hear your thoughts on green printing, and the experiences that you have had. I am definitely a supporter in saving the environment, but I also want a satisfied client at the same time.
