Knowing keyboard shortcuts, key and mouse combinations and interface shortcuts will make your life a lot easier. For example, instead of kerning your type using the character panel, you can use the Alt or Option key, and the left and right arrows to increase the spacing between letters or decrease the spacing between letters. This is much easier than using the character panel, or clicking and going back-and-forth. This also enables you to optically adjust the spacing between letters, allowing you to do a better kerning job.
